Calgarians are among country’s most web savvy.

“Calgarians are among this country’s most web savvy,” is the finding of Calgary Sun reporter Bill Laye after reviewing the latest Stats Canada numbers on the subject.

Bill notes, “in its annual survey of online use, StatsCan said 77% of adult Calgarians surfed the ’Net for personal reasons. That figure tied Ottawa for the highest level of Internet use in a Canadian city in 2005.”

I too was surprised by the high percentage in Calgary using the Internet for personal reasons. Now we just need to get them to stop watching porn and over to listening to locally produced podcasts(lol).

Wait, there’s porn on the internet???? :)

I think with the explosion of “user created content” like podcasts, and vid-casts, as well as social media like blogs, the internet is becoming a more useful part of people’s lives. Now, even though 77% of Calgary adults are “online”, are they make good use of what is there? Do they know what is there? (unfortunately porn, casinos and spam are easily found) I have notice, at least in my industry, most people can use basic email and a word processor on their computers and that is it. Once you show them some other useful tools, they start seeing more value in that computer. It is up to creators, podcasters and bloggers to guide people into this world and show them how they can easily get this content and how can enrich their lives.
