All I want for Christmas is another Calgary based music podcast.

Saturday, December 1st, 2007

Since the sudden demise of Confessions of a DJ my need for a Calgary based music podcast has been growing. Yeah, I know, AllAxisRadio should be enough music podcast for me, but I am a bit greedy. Enter Giant Spheres Inside Calgary Music Scene. Kristoffer Benoit hosts this podcast that features music, and interviews from the Calgary Music Scene as well as news and event listings. Kristoffer has two shows up so far. I encourage your to have a listen. Welcome to the club Kristoffer. You can find links to the site and the feed on the Directory page.

Ample Animations Abound

Thursday, November 22nd, 2007

Thanx to DuGG for the heads up on this one…

TheQuickdraw Animation Society’s Youth Animation Project along with its partners The Creative Monkeys are jumping into the Web 2.0 soup making the original animations they are famous for available via podcasting.
From their release

www.quickdrawshowcase.com a site that will feature animated films produced at Quickdraw Animation Society. Internet vodcasting (video podcasting) has granted the power of mass media, formerly controlled by major broadcasters, into the hands of the lowly indie animator/filmmaker. The purpose of the site is to promote indie animators creating interesting and thought provoking works. We are hoping that www.quickdrawshowcase.com will become a hub of animation fervor both locally, nationally, and internationally. Eventually many shows will be aired from the site the first of which is entitled ‘Frame by Frame’.

‘Frame by Frame’ is a new vodcast internet show launched by Quickdraw Animation society and the Youth Animation Project. Each episode will feature a new short animated film by a local Calgary based animator produced by the Youth Animation Project, a Service Canada Skills Link project (www.quickdrawshowcase.com/youth-animation-project ). Episodes will air twice a month on the 1st and the 15th. You can visit www.quickdrawshowcase.com to view new episode on its own or subscribe to the rss stream and new episode will be uploaded to your computer minutes after being posted on the site.

You will find the Feed here. I’ve subscribed and I will catch the episodes on my ipod touch. The only think I could suggest is that they add an itune “1click” to save me from cutting and pasting. (Maybe throw in a Zune 1click for fun)

News when you can use it

Global television recently launched podcasts of local news coverage from Calgary. Previously the national broadcaster offered just one feed, from Toronto, audio only. Now it has 14 separate feeds from across the country and two of them are from Calgary!

Global was very considerate of the audience offering the same programming in both audio only & video formats. I own a video iPod myself but opted for the audio feed so I can listen to the show during my commute.

Making local news content available on demand is a big step for broadcasters in our community. Could this take away from the traditional viewing audience? No – not significantly anyway. It will help them grow new audience and they will discover this like every independent podcaster that has come before them.

I believe that a significant portion of the audience core will completely transition away from traditional broadcastings in favor of on demand network technologies. But the infrastructure and user adoption are still several years away from being popular on mass. However, it is worth noting that Global Calgary is already prepared to serve those needs now.

Welcome Global Calgary to this medium we call podcasting. We’re proud to have you pioneering with us.

Podcasting will save you 1.1 million dollars

It comes as no surprise to us here at podCALGARY cause we were behind him the whole way, but we still want to say a big congrats to Jeremy Z for coming in 4th in the recent race for the Mayor of Calgary. (Jeremy was the only canditate to be listed in the podCALGARY directory. ) There was a huge gap between 1st and 4th place, actually, the was a huge gap between 1st and second place, but you need to put it into perspective. Dave the incumbent had around 60% of the votes and Jeremy brought in about 4%. Third place, Sandy Jenkins, pulled in 8%. But the interesting story here is with 2and place (18%) Alnoor, who spent 1.2 million on his campaign. I haven’t confirmed this but I a confident that Jeremy spent less than 100 000.00 on his campaign. So there you go, you can spend 1.2 million and come in second, or you can podcast and come in forth, either way you don’t get to wear the Mayor hat, but if you podcast you will save at least 1.1 million.

Seriously, great run Jeremy.
