What’s new in podcasting

Wednesday, November 14th, 2007

Hi all, sorry that it has been a while since I have posted. As you know, one of my jobs at podCALGARY is to report on and discuss who is podcasting in Calgary. Well I haven’t been doing a great job but I have an excuse. First, I run a Google Alerts to let me know when someone in Calgary is podcasting, the alerts have been a bit dry. I am starting to question their accuracy since Dugg scooped me on the Global News podcast. I am currently reserving judgment on the podcast, while it is great to get my new on my ipod, they need some serious help. Anyway, my point here is that there isn’t really anything new happening in the Calgary Podosphere so I thought I would fire a podcasting news and technology question out to my buddy Doug.

Hey Doug, on Tuesday November 13th Microsoft’s Zune and Zune Marketplace release podcasting support. Could you let us know a few things? 1. Is there a “one click” subscribe code that podcasters can add to their sites. 2. How does a podcaster get his/her podcast listed in the Zune Marketplaces? 3. What do you think of the Zune podcasting interface?

I am asking Doug these questions partly because he handles this kind of thing for podCALGARY, he uses Windows and mostly cause he scooped me on the Global thing.

News when you can use it

Friday, October 26th, 2007

Global television recently launched podcasts of local news coverage from Calgary. Previously the national broadcaster offered just one feed, from Toronto, audio only. Now it has 14 separate feeds from across the country and two of them are from Calgary!

Global was very considerate of the audience offering the same programming in both audio only & video formats. I own a video iPod myself but opted for the audio feed so I can listen to the show during my commute.

Making local news content available on demand is a big step for broadcasters in our community. Could this take away from the traditional viewing audience? No – not significantly anyway. It will help them grow new audience and they will discover this like every independent podcaster that has come before them.

I believe that a significant portion of the audience core will completely transition away from traditional broadcastings in favor of on demand network technologies. But the infrastructure and user adoption are still several years away from being popular on mass. However, it is worth noting that Global Calgary is already prepared to serve those needs now.

Welcome Global Calgary to this medium we call podcasting. We’re proud to have you pioneering with us.

Who should be podcasting in Calgary?

Wednesday, September 26th, 2007

One of my jobs here at podCALGARY is to explore and keep track of who is podcasting in Calgary. I use a number of tools to do this. Google Alerts found Jeremy, and Facebook fed me a Monster Cookie. But there really hasn’t been a lot of new podcasts popping up in Calgary. Over the next little while I am going to look at who I think should be podcasting in Calgary. You can do a few things to help me out here. You can comment on who you think should be podcasting in Calgary. You can let me know about someone I don’t know about. Or you can even start podcasting and then tell me about it.

Hey, if you’re thinking about podcasting in Calgary, why not consider taking a class, like the class offered at Chinook Learning Services called Podcasting Made Easy. This is a one day class that will teach you everything you would need to know to start your own podcast. To make it even better it is being taught by me, Daryl Cognito. So not only do you get to learn how to podcast but you get to meet me. Seriously, does it get better than that?

An important part of 125,000

Thursday, September 6th, 2007

After unveiling the new iPods to the world this week Steve Jobs also noted some important growth in the world of podcasting. According to Apples last count there are now 125,000 podcasts listed in iTunes.

“This is amazing material,” said Jobs. “It’s free, and over 25k are video podcasts.”

While they didn’t bother to note how many came from each part of the world the important fact remains that this is a viable and growing medium. And this is true for Calgary as well. Our list of Calgary podcasters has grown a great deal since we began tracking over a year and a half ago.

In traditional television and radio this amount of choice is absurd. So it stands to reason that they would select only the programs with the broadest appeal to cast over the air.

But with podcasting there is no limitation. A program of any subject can be of any length and is consumed when the audience wants it – not when the broadcaster airs it. Thanks to services like iTunes we can pick our own shows and program our own channels to enjoy.

I don’t credit Apple with inventing something here. I credit them with making it better.
