<itunes:summary>That's simple, when it is Streaming Audio. Well, it's simple for those of us swimming in the web 2.0 soup, but not for everyone. To put it simply, a podcast is a media file with a RSS feed (or is it an RSS feed, grammar isn't my strong suit) pointing to it. The RSS feed is what tells the podcatcher or aggregator where the ... Blah Blah Blah Blah ipod Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah CBC Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah

That's how many people here the explanation. Okay enough with linking, what's my point.
A couple of times this week while I was engaged in my real life, and while I working on some stuff for amuk.ca I encounter two listings for podcasts that interested me. Actually, they really excited me because they were both tied to my other passions. After searching for quite awhile for a feed link I contacted the groups producing these podcasts and one got back to me. After a very pleasant conversation (yes I used a phone) I realized that the RSS feed may not be as understood as I had assumed. In both of these cases I volunteered to help get the feed set up. (This was self serving because I really want to listen to this content on my mp3 player, not my computer but it also fits the mission of podCALGARY)
You can find examples throughout the tubes where people use the term "Podcast" when what they have is Streaming Audio. This can be a problem not just because we can't subscribe like we like to, but also because it confuses people about what a podcast really is.

My question to you is, is this a real problem? Do we need to guard the term "Podcast" and work (gently) towards its correct use?

<itunes:summary>A little while back I took a run through the directory and cleaned it up a bit. I notice the listing for a fun little music podcast hosted by DJ Jeff, it was called Confessions of a DJ. Reluctantly I deleted the listing because the DJ had hung up his microphone.  But, wait just a minute, do I her the siren call of of a Gibson Flying V, or the soul shaking sound of a stack of Marshalls? Why, I think I do. In fact my head is being filled with ROCK! That can only me one thing, yep, Mr. Rock and Roll himself DJ Jeff is back with a new Podcast. High Voltage Rock has just dropped it first show. Welcome back Jeff we've missed you.
I am starting to think Calgary might be leading the way in Music podcast.

<itunes:summary>The Calgary Social and New Media Meet Up group held its second official meet up on Saturday. I have to say it was a huge success, with three new people attending. Sadly, Ajay and Jeff could not make but we got by. I am hoping that the March meet up will include a few more new people. To entice you to attend we are hoping that Ajay will give us an update on his trip to PodCamp Toronto.

The whole point of these meet ups it to give people an outlet to talk about podcasting and new media and hopefully encourage people not yet podcasting to get started. So if you are in or near Calgary and have an interest in the web 2.0 soup feel free to drop by Chilies on March 12 at 2:30

<itunes:summary>I finally got around to adding the one click links for the Zune Marketplace and Google Reader. I realize that the Zune ain't available in Canada (poor, poor us, guess were stuck with the ipod) but I added the links to make it easier for people outside of Canada to subscribe to the shows listed in the directory. When I added the Zune one click to the Atomic Suburbia site I saw a 50% increase in subscribers. So it can't hurt.

I've go through and checked everything and I believe the all work. (let me know if you find one that doesn't) Feel free to add the code to your own site, but please link to your own image.

<itunes:summary>Remember a couple of posts back when I was wishin' for another Calgary music podcast? If not look down. I introduced you to the Giant Spheres Inside Calgary's Music Scene. Which I have to say it is turning out to be a great show. This week podCALGARY was contacted by Chris of KMNR.ca. (note, this is at least the third Chris or Kris in the podCALGARY Directory.) Chris let us know that he has started the "Off the Dial" Podcast, a companion to the KMNR website.

Off the Dial is a monthly podcast in conjunction with kMNR...Music News Weekly (http://www.kmnr.ca) featuring the music of local/independent acts from Calgary, Canada and abroad. The genre ranges from rock to punk to experimental and all stops in between.

Chris has been writing a newsletter for over three years but only started the podcast a couple of months ago. He has a nice, relaxed and casual style behind the mic, it feels like he has been there for years. I listened to show number 2 while having a root canal and I can honestly say it made the experience a whole lot better. It helped when he played a great song by Wintersleep called Archaeologists which is one of my favorite tunes. He also contacted Henry Rollins and got permission to play a couple of tunes from him. I think it is fair to say that Chris knows his music and has pretty varied tastes.
Even though Off the Dial focuses on Canadian and Calgary music, according to Chris there is also enough music from abroad to keep anyone interested. However, Chris doesn't let on who the broad is. You'll have to listen to find out

<itunes:summary>Whose podcasting in Calgary you ask? (yes you did, I heard you.) How about famed Audio Blogger and Author Chris Hvidsten. Chris has a second entry into the podCALGARY Directory with his Audio Book "Outcast". And hey, Outcast is the first Audio Book in the directory. (I don't think it is Calgary's first podcast book but the other Author has been a bit resistant to being listed, or I keep forgetting to list her.)
Summary:

Dalan Kalamar, a young aristocrat, finds himself stripped of his title, name, and family.

Now an outcast from society, he is forced into a life of marginal living, manual labour, and avoiding the murderous intentions of people once considered his friends.
This explains why Kick in the Cast has been slow in coming out so we can forgive Chris. Plus he assures us the a new Kick in the Cast is coming in the new year.

<itunes:summary>Thanx to DuGG for the heads up on this one...

TheQuickdraw Animation Society's Youth Animation Project along with its partners The Creative Monkeys are jumping into the Web 2.0 soup making the original animations they are famous for available via podcasting.
From their release
...www.quickdrawshowcase.com a site that will feature animated films produced at Quickdraw Animation Society. Internet vodcasting (video podcasting) has granted the power of mass media, formerly controlled by major broadcasters, into the hands of the lowly indie animator/filmmaker. The purpose of the site is to promote indie animators creating interesting and thought provoking works. We are hoping that www.quickdrawshowcase.com will become a hub of animation fervor both locally, nationally, and internationally. Eventually many shows will be aired from the site the first of which is entitled ‘Frame by Frame’.

‘Frame by Frame’ is a new vodcast internet show launched by Quickdraw Animation society and the Youth Animation Project. Each episode will feature a new short animated film by a local Calgary based animator produced by the Youth Animation Project, a Service Canada Skills Link project (www.quickdrawshowcase.com/youth-animation-project ). Episodes will air twice a month on the 1st and the 15th. You can visit www.quickdrawshowcase.com to view new episode on its own or subscribe to the rss stream and new episode will be uploaded to your computer minutes after being posted on the site.

You will find the Feed here. I've subscribed and I will catch the episodes on my ipod touch. The only think I could suggest is that they add an itune "1click" to save me from cutting and pasting. (Maybe throw in a Zune 1click for fun)

<itunes:summary>If this was an interview Daryl would clearly be leading with his questions. However I know that his time is being rampantly consumed touching his new iPod and that he would loathe the idea of soiling his finger prints on a Zune.

Daryl – thanks for the question.

Yes, the Zune now has podcatching support thanks to the latest firmware update for the device. There are even a few video podcasts featured on the Zune site including Ask A Ninja, WallStrip and the Nightly News with Brian Williams. But if your looking for video news on your Zune I’d recommend the Global News Hour with Gord Gillies and Nirmala Naidoo.

But how easy is it to get a podcast on to a Zune? Very!

Thankfully the Zune team saw the merit in the one click innovation that was developed for iTunes. For those of you who are not familiar with this – a “one click” is a string of code that distills the process of subscribing to a podcast into a single mouse click. This beats having to explain what RSS is to those that don’t already know.

So how do you create a one click for Zune’s? Very!

Here is the composition and an example from Zune Insider:
Create your unique link URL using this format: zune://subscribe/?PodcastTitle=PodcastRSSFeedURL

Here is a working example: zune://subscribe/?wallstrip=http://feeds.feedburner.com/wallstrip

But what Web 2.0 service would be complete without an unofficial chicklet?

Rob Walch of Podcast411 answered the call and created one himself:

http://www.podcast411.com/blog/?p=39

So there you have it – the Zune now supports podcasting and now podcasters can support the Zune!</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Hi all, sorry that it has been a while since I have posted. As you know, one of my jobs at podCALGARY is to report on and discuss who is podcasting in Calgary. Well I haven't been doing a great job but I have an excuse. First, I run a Google Alerts to let me know when someone in Calgary is podcasting, the alerts have been a bit dry. I am starting to question their accuracy since Dugg scooped me on the Global News podcast. I am currently reserving judgment on the podcast, while it is great to get my new on my ipod, they need some serious help. Anyway, my point here is that there isn't really anything new happening in the Calgary Podosphere so I thought I would fire a podcasting news and technology question out to my buddy Doug.

Hey Doug, on Tuesday November 13th Microsoft's Zune and Zune Marketplace release podcasting support. Could you let us know a few things? 1. Is there a "one click" subscribe code that podcasters can add to their sites. 2. How does a podcaster get his/her podcast listed in the Zune Marketplaces? 3. What do you think of the Zune podcasting interface?

I am asking Doug these questions partly because he handles this kind of thing for podCALGARY, he uses Windows and mostly cause he scooped me on the Global thing.

<itunes:summary>Global television recently launched podcasts of local news coverage from Calgary. Previously the national broadcaster offered just one feed, from Toronto, audio only. Now it has 14 separate feeds from across the country and two of them are from Calgary!

Global was very considerate of the audience offering the same programming in both audio only video formats. I own a video iPod myself but opted for the audio feed so I can listen to the show during my commute.
Making local news content available on demand is a big step for broadcasters in our community. Could this take away from the traditional viewing audience? No – not significantly anyway. It will help them grow new audience and they will discover this like every independent podcaster that has come before them.

I believe that a significant portion of the audience core will completely transition away from traditional broadcastings in favor of on demand network technologies. But the infrastructure and user adoption are still several years away from being popular on mass. However, it is worth noting that Global Calgary is already prepared to serve those needs now.

Welcome Global Calgary to this medium we call podcasting. We’re proud to have you pioneering with us.

<itunes:summary>It comes as no surprise to us here at podCALGARY cause we were behind him the whole way, but we still want to say a big congrats to Jeremy Z for coming in 4th in the recent race for the Mayor of Calgary. (Jeremy was the only canditate to be listed in the podCALGARY directory. ) There was a huge gap between 1st and 4th place, actually, the was a huge gap between 1st and second place, but you need to put it into perspective. Dave the incumbent had around 60% of the votes and Jeremy brought in about 4%. Third place, Sandy Jenkins, pulled in 8%. But the interesting story here is with 2and place (18%) Alnoor, who spent 1.2 million on his campaign. I haven't confirmed this but I a confident that Jeremy spent less than 100 000.00 on his campaign. So there you go, you can spend 1.2 million and come in second, or you can podcast and come in forth, either way you don't get to wear the Mayor hat, but if you podcast you will save at least 1.1 million.

Seriously, great run Jeremy.

<itunes:summary>It's official, ladies and gentlemen. on October 31, 2007, Yahoo will cease it's 'Yahoo Podcasts' directory indefinitely. While that may not mean a lot to you - as you're already subscribed to the two best podcasts in Calgary - it certainly means a lot to the rest of the podcasting world.

After iTunes, Google, Odeo, the Podcast Pickle, Podcast Alley, Digg, CanadaPodcasts.ca, and Pluggd, Yahoo Podcasts was the premier Podcast directory in which average listeners could discover and critique independent podcasts.
What does that mean in the long run? Well, not much, if taken at face value. But, if you consider Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, Jaiku, De.licio.us, PodFeed, and the numerous other digital networking tools at our disposal, it means we're - approximately - seven per cent worse off than we were yesterday.

Seven per cent doesn't sound like a lot, but take this into consideration. Seven is a prime number. Not only that, but it's also the number of Atlas' daughters, the atomic number of Nitrogen, and the code for international direct dial phone calls to Russia and Kazakhstan.

In all seriousness, Yahoo was one of the few directories that had the potential to cater to a mainstream audience - a 'flashing 12' crowd, as some may say, and it's disturbing to see the service fold at such crucial time for the medium.

The merger between Sirius and XM Satellite radio is looming; the number of active founding podcasts is diminishing, and a large majority of newer shows are struggling to compete with the rest of the online world. Yahoo Podcasts was one of the few (see: the above list) directories that could have been a household name.

What about the little guy? At this point, it doesn't mean much. The issue will arise when CBC, CNN, CNBC, and all of the other C-words begin taking notice. The fact remains: Yahoo Podcasts was yet another community-supported, yet corporately-ignored, podcast directory that has fallen by the wayside - laying in the wake for its peers.

		<itunes:summary>A good friend asked:
About the new iPod touch and the iPhone... Do you think that these devices are revolutionary and innovative? Or are they simply just a way to sell more content.

Case in point, the wifi iTunes store is a stripped down store allowing purchase only. No podcast updating. Apple could have easily put iTunes on the phone and touch. This would have allowed syncing podcasts on the go and would have lead to some really innovative uses of RSS. Instead Apple crippled the features.
When considering the iPhone and iPod I do not think of them being innovative. MP3 players and multifunction phones have been around for a while and Apple wasn't the first to bring these to market much like Henry Ford didn't invent the automocar. But the way they marketed this and, most importantly, improved and simplified functionality for average users or the "computer illiterate" was revolutionary! And like Henry Ford it has brought them great success.

So how then does this new WiFi iTunes store rate with me? I'd call this a first step. Henry Ford said, "you can have a Model-T in any colour you like - as long as it's black." Here - Apple is doing the same: offering just one service and testing the water. This is new ground not just for them but for many users too. Perhaps some of us think of ourselves as advanced users or well ahead of the user ship curve but it's within that curve that things are most likely possible and profitable. If the masses don't opt into these services or even find them practical then they are not profitable and can not likely be maintained.

For that reason I'm not surprised that the current WiFi iTunes store offering is so limited. But looking back over the evolution of the iPod, the internet and the way we use technology - I have every faith that this too will change and for the better ...and sooner then we think!

By overcoming the lack of understanding around this type of technology we can demonstrate to others that this is more than a fad or novelty and that there are some practical applications for this technology that can assist you in your day to day life.

<itunes:summary>One of our favourite podCALGARY alumni, who won podcast immortality and five Emmys for playing the bumbling DJ Jeff on the "Confessions of a DJ" podcast, with self-deprecating humor, is remembered by his friends and supporters.

Jeff, 81, died Friday of Podcaster Burnout at the University of California, Los Angeles Medical Center, said Sherwin Bash, his friend and manager.

His half-century career included more than 40 episodes and seven TV series, most notably playing the bug-eyed deputy who carried in his shirt pocket the one bullet he was allowed after shooting himself in the foot. The constant fumbling, a recurring sight gag, was typical of his self-deprecating humor.

The show ran from 2006-2007, and was in the top 10 of the Nielsen ratings each season. It is one of only three series in podcast history to bow out at the top. The 40+ episodes have appeared frequently in reruns and spawned a large, active network of fan clubs.

Jeff, whose shy, soft-spoken manner was unlike his high-strung characters, once said he was most proud of the 'DJ Jeff' character and didn't mind being remembered that way.

In 1998, he had a key role in the back-to-the-past movie ``Pleasantville,'' playing a folksy television repairman whose supercharged remote control sends a teen boy and his sister into a TV sitcom past.

Jeff began his showbiz career even before he graduated from high school, performing as a ventriloquist at local clubs and churches. He majored in speech at West Virginia University, then took off for the big city.

All of us at podCALGARY.org will truly miss the Confessions of a DJ podcast.

Google Alerts found Jeremy, and Facebook fed me a Monster Cookie. But there really hasn't been a lot of new podcasts popping up in Calgary. Over the next little while I am going to look at who I think should be podcasting in Calgary. You can do a few things to help me out here. You can comment on who you think should be podcasting in Calgary. You can let me know about someone I don't know about. Or you can even start podcasting and then tell me about it.

Hey, if you're thinking about podcasting in Calgary, why not consider taking a class, like the class offered at Chinook Learning Services called Podcasting Made Easy. This is a one day class that will teach you everything you would need to know to start your own podcast. To make it even better it is being taught by me, Daryl Cognito. So not only do you get to learn how to podcast but you get to meet me. Seriously, does it get better than that?

<itunes:summary>It's safe to say that I don't know the difference between Linux and a Lexus or Linus for that matter. But you really don't need to to enjoy The JaK Attack. Up until now, Jon Watson and Kelly Penguin Girl (That's actually her maiden name) have been podcasting from the base of the Canadian Rockies. But Calgary is losing one of it's best podcasts because Jon and Kelly are heading to Nova Scotia, and I don't mean the bank.

I need to back up a bit because if you look at The JaK Attack feed you see about 68 shows, but that's not the whole story. Jon and Kelly were actually one of the very first Calgary podcast. Jon started with Tales from the Motherboard. Unfortunately that podcast does not seem to be up any more so I've linked to his blog. Jon also used to write a blog about business podcasting, but again, that one is gone as well. Now that I think about it, Jon seems to do a lot of leaving.

Jon and Kelly have left Calgary, but (we hope) that after their cross country journey they will be back. And all of us at podCALGARY wish you the best of luck.

<itunes:summary>After unveiling the new iPods to the world this week Steve Jobs also noted some important growth in the world of podcasting. According to Apples last count there are now 125,000 podcasts listed in iTunes.

“This is amazing material,” said Jobs. “It’s free, and over 25k are video podcasts.”

While they didn’t bother to note how many came from each part of the world the important fact remains that this is a viable and growing medium. And this is true for Calgary as well. Our list of Calgary podcasters has grown a great deal since we began tracking over a year and a half ago.

In traditional television and radio this amount of choice is absurd. So it stands to reason that they would select only the programs with the broadest appeal to cast over the air.

But with podcasting there is no limitation. A program of any subject can be of any length and is consumed when the audience wants it – not when the broadcaster airs it. Thanks to services like iTunes we can pick our own shows and program our own channels to enjoy.

I don’t credit Apple with inventing something here. I credit them with making it better.</itunes:summary>

I'm not too sure what colour Jeremy Zhao is, but he definitely brings a new shade to Calgary's upcoming Mayoral race.

Jeremy is using podcasting and video podcasting to help promote his platform. I have heard Jeremy's first two shows and they are not too bad. But what is important is Jeremy's Juice - Google Juice, that is. Type "Calgary Mayor Podcast" into Google and Jeremy is number one.
You can find links to Jeremy's podcacst in the podCALGARY directory.

This years mayoral candidates include:

	Dave Bronconnier

	Barry Eldridge

	Oscar Fech

	Alexander Jenkins

	Alnoor Kassam

	Doug Service

	Jeremy Zhao

		<itunes:summary>'Sup Babies

Calgary's own All Axis Radio has been nominated for a Podcast Peer Award.

What the heck is a Podcast Peer Award, you ask? Well, you could go to the web site and find out for yourself. Once there, if you are a podcaster, you can sign up and vote for your favorites. Or I can tell you, then you can go to the site, sign up and vote.

The Podcast Peer Awards are the brain child of Dave Hitt, as a way for podcasters to acknowledge the work of the podcasting community. But Let's let Dave explain it, shall we?

There are over 50,000 audio and video podcasts available. Most of them are lousy. How can you find the ones worth listening to?

Top Ten or Top Twenty-five lists are little more than popularity contests. You'll find some great shows there, shows that deserve their popularity. But you'll also find quite a few that are, well, let's just say that more people listen to Brittany Spears than Miles Davis. If you rely on popularity based lists and awards you'll be missing some of the best shows out there.

Where can you find the best podcasts in the universe? Right here, at the Podcast Peer Awards. These awards are given by the people who know podcasting best - other podcasters. They recognize quality. They celebrate creativity. They ferret out the small, unnoticed, and otherwise ignored shows you've missed. They debate and discuss and argue about these shows as they vote for (and against) audio and video podcasts that cover every style and every approach to podcasting. And in the end, only the best, only the very best, win.

So, why should you care? Because Ajay from All Axis Radio has been nominated, and, while it is an honor just to be nominated, we would love to see a podCALGARY podcast bring one home! So get the heck over there and show the love.

Your podcast bandito,

A person cruising around on Calgary streets with an iPod’s white ear-buds shoved firmly in their ears is a common sight.

It’s partly because of the iPod’s growing popularity that last year, three local podcasting aficionados created a venue for aspiring podcasters and passionate podcatchers - the people who listen to podcasts - to congregate.

“I don't always have a lot of time to read - an audio format is a lot more digestible and of interest to me,” says Doug Nouwen, 29, who formed podCALGARY.org along with Sean Austin-Joyner, 30, and Daryl “Cognito” Pamplin, 41.

"Podcasting is on demand - I can listen to what I want, when I want to," says Nouwen, adding this form of media caters to his busy lifestyle. He says he downloads his podcasts and listens to them from his car stereo while driving to and from work.

Greetings from the iTunes Podcasting Team:

Apple TV is here, and podcasts are making a big move into the living room. We want all of them to look as good as possible, so we have three video formatting recommendations for you. Also note that we have just posted a revised and expanded technical spec. Finally, the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference is coming up. There's a major focus on developers of content in addition to developers of software.

Recommendations for Formatting Video Podcasts

1. If you're encoding your video podcast at 320x240, please increase the resolution to either 640x480 or 640x360 (depending on the aspect ratio of your source files). Why? Because video podcasts at this resolution look great on Apple TV and still port to video iPods. Lower resolution podcasts might also work on both platforms, but they don't look nearly as good on a widescreen TV. As always, make sure to test any encoding changes you make to ensure device compatibility. QuickTime 7.1's "Export to iPod" function will ensure that a video file is encoded at a width of 640 and is iPod-compatible.

2. It's best not to create two different podcast feeds for different resolutions. By doing so, you dilute the popularity of your podcast and reduce exposure in our charts. It's better to have one feed high in the charts than two that are lower.

3. If your source files are 16:9, stick with that aspect ratio. Don't add letterboxing to make them 4:3. By doing so, you prevent the video from expanding to fill a 16:9 widescreen TV and instead end up with black space on all four sides. Also, your original source files should be at least 640 pixels wide.

Of course these are just recommendations. We understand that there are good reasons for 320x240 (bandwidth bills) and 720p (looks fantastic). Do whatever makes the most sense for your show.  For more information on formatting video, see the recently updated spec:

http://www.apple.com/itunes/store/podcaststechspecs.html

To see a sample of excellent podcasts that also look great with Apple TV, check out the Apple TV Podcast Showcase.</itunes:summary>

If you were to look at all of the other bands on the charts at the same time, Black Lab was the ONLY UNSIGNED BAND.

Just getting onto the charts is pretty huge. Note that there are record companies out there that can't do what we did on the 24th.

Was there movement on the charts that wasn't apparent because they only updated 3x in 24 hours? Possibly. Was there an Apple conspiracy to shut down the charts on Bum Rush day? I really doubt it.

Did traditional media take notice? Washington Post, BBC, San Jose Mercury, Billboard, Spin, CBC, Businessweek and others.

Was it a success? You tell me. The whole experiment was set up to show that podcasting and new media is a social movement that has a pretty far reach across the globe. Bum Rush got a lot of people inside and outside of new media talking, shed more light on podcasting and helped get some exposure for an unsigned band and helped them tell their story about how they were mistreated by a major record label.

Honestly, 100 percent the credit belongs to you, the podcasters, podcast listeners, bloggers and blog readers who took part in Bum Rush the Charts.

Imagine what we could have done if we had made it a whole Bum Rush week instead of a day?

		<itunes:summary>Daryl;

I see what you're getting at, and I can't say that I disagree. This whole "experiment" reeks of Podshow manipulation, and in the long run, the impact will likely be minimal and serve more as a circle jerk for Podcasters. Average listeners will barely bat an eye. I do think you may be missing the point of this whole thing, though. A few points:

1- Music is viral. Always has been, and always will be. The only way we ever hear about any new band/ group/ genre is by word of mouth, be it a friend, a car driving by, or a large-scale advertisement. Whether you're talking about Beyonce or the Sex Pistols, your affiliation with them came from some (any) other source. It's up to the listener to filter out the crap, which unfortunately, rarely happens.

2- Look at the Top Songs in iTunes right now. All spots were bought and paid for. The money went to marketing reps, and the artist owns nothing. BRTC is taking artist-owned content with little ad revenue backing it, and attempting to give it a foothold.

3- What's the difference between this and people promoting the Podcast Pickle Favourites, Podcast Alley votes or the Podcast Peer awards? The result of being high in the rankings is the same: more listeners. There isn't a show I listen to that doesn't consistently whore most (if not all) of those sites.

4- I probably would have waited until after the 22nd to post that. Not to censor an opinion, but much of what we're dealing with is speculation. I'd be interesting to see how this whole thing plays out, and critique afterwards.

5- We should probably get in the habit of signing our names to blog posts on podCALGARY, so the reader knows who the author was.

Love,
- Ajay</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>I have a feeling that the little experiment is going to backfire on those hoping to "stick it to the man". One of the complaints I often here about "Big Media" (here on reffered to as BM) is that they tell us what to listen to. They make stars out of the likes of Britney Spears and New Kids on the Block by hyping the crap out them and pushing the albums. Bands that are good, typically "indie bands" get ignored. Now a group of podcasters get together and decide that the only way to show BM that podcast is better is to act like BM.

In reality BM won't even notice this little experiment. BlackLab will make a few bucks, a charity will make a few bucks but that's about it. But think about this, there is a good chance that there will be a loser in this. The consumer. Because once again a group of people are getting together and deciding who I should listen to. I think independent media is starting to smell a lot like BM. (That's Big Media)
Just my opinion

<itunes:summary>New Page 2 Excerpts From: bumrushthecharts.blogspot.com...podcasting is more than just a delivery mechanism - it's a social movement. People are sick of the watered-down, cookie-cutter content that networks and record companies expect us to enjoy.

We can match and exceed the reach of big media, corporate media, labels, and the entrenched interests. On March 22nd, we are going to take an indie podsafe music artist to number one on the iTunes singles charts as a demonstration of our reach to Main Street and our purchasing power to Wall Street.

The track we've chosen is "Mine Again" by Black Lab. A band that was dropped from not just one, but two major record labels (Geffen and Sony/Epic) and in the process forced them to fight to get their own music back. We picked them because making them number one, even for just one day, will remind the RIAA record labels of what they turned their backs on - and who they ignore at their peril. What's more, we're going to take it a step beyond that. ...every commission made on the sale of "Mine Again" will be donated to college scholarships, ...Black Lab has taken it up another notch - 50% of their earnings are going to be donated to the scholarship fund as well.

If you believe in the power of new media, on March 22nd, 2007, take 99 cents and 2 minutes of your time to join the revolution and make iTunes "Mine Again".
If you're a content producer (blogger, podcaster, etc.), we're asking you to join up with us and help spread the word to your audience. Nothing would prove the power of new media more than showing corporate media that not only can we exceed their reach and match their purchasing power, but that we can do it AND make a positive difference in the world. If we can succeed with this small example, then there's no telling what can do next.

Doug has smooth and sexy voice that makes all the ladies melt, Ajay has a great ass, and Daryl, well Daryl eats like a 4 year old. We talk about podcasting the birth of Doug's baby. Other topics include Chinese Learn Online, Daryl's class with Chinook Learning Services. The most interesting thing about this class was that a couple of people attending the first class wanted to learn how to listen to a podcast. The discussion devolves into Knitting and the Calgary Flames.
Next time we will welcome special guest bob goyetche and everyone is welcome. Watch the front page for details

<itunes:summary>I didn't think I would say this of Bill Gates but - "PREACH ON!"

Bill claimed that, "Internet TV Will Revolutionize Television In 5 Years," at the World Economic Forum and I must say I like what he's talking about. He went on to suggest that in five years we would look back and laugh at what we've had.

TV and media on the internet has been possible for many years but the experience was lacking the quality that we were accustomed to in our living rooms. You can download an entire movie off the net but watching it on your PC... at your desk... in an office chair... it just isn't the same.

Alternately you could build a powerful media center PC to playback all of your downloads but the investment for a good one was nothing to sneeze at and you probably all ready have a perfectly good TV, DVD player, and cable box in your living room.

So why now? And how?

For that answer we need to shift our focus from Microsoft back to Apple. At this years Mac World Steve Jobs introduced their solution to bridge the gap between the internet and your living room. It's called Apple TV.

The name has the ring of a premium television subscription channel but it is - in fact - a small network box that connects to your computer and outputs to your television. But the notion of it being a channel isn't far off. I believe it is the only channel you would ever care for. Programing that is 100% to your liking and on at all the right times for you.

Apple TV represents and evolution in the on demand service arena. An article from the NYT explained that, "consumers now demand more from their televisions, largely thanks to TiVo, which has forced the cable companies to ask suppliers for more innovative set-top boxes.

To be fair Apple wasn't the first with this device.  The Slingbox has been around a lot longer. But given Apple's success with the iPod alone it's reasonable to expect that this will be a big deal to. They didn't invent the portable media player - they made it better and this is what I anticpate will happen with television content delivered via the internet.

Bill says this will take 5 years for this paradigm to shift.  I say to both he and Steve, HURRY UP! :)

(yes, I know, some of you got other mp3 players and they work the same so don't worry.) The biggest challenge you face now is getting all your music onto it. Well if it is already on your computer all you have to do is sync. If not you have a little work ahead of you. But fear not, you can start using that shinny new gadget right now.

Fire up itunes and on the left hand side you will see a listing for "Podcast". At the bottom you will see a like for the directory. You can click on it a search for podcast that interest you. Once you find one you like simply click "subscribe" and it will download to your itunes library and then sync to your ipod.

Now, if that is too much work we can make it easier. Just check out the podCALGARY directory on the left. Every show has an itunes "one click" button to subscribe.

Here are two to get you started.

AllAxisRadio The Poddog Show

Now, if you want to get to know your ipod a little better check out ipod lounge and iprong. iprong has a great podcast. You can also find some great stuff over at the Podcast Pickle check out the top 100 and also Pickle Tales. Pickle Tales has so great Christmas stuff.
Oh ya, and congrats to podFounder Dugg and his lovely wife on the birth of their first child. Born on Christmas eve, way to go guys. A podFounder has a podBaby and in true podcasting fashion, the baby was delivered by RSS

<itunes:summary>I have been discussing the potential of podcasting as an educational tool on numerous occasions recently and wanted to post a very important resource.
Several months ago Apple announced iTunes U a free support service for university and college educators. Simply summarized; if you record it - they’ll share it.

There are multiple reasons for educators to consider this technology. Podcasted classes from the UofC have been well received by students and incorporated into lesson plans. An 8 minutes NUTV documentary titled Techno Education explained the need for technologies like this to be included in the classroom and to successfully extend it.

The two most common technical concerns relate to sharing the content and recording it.
“They can listen to and view that content on their Mac or PC, or transfer it to iPod for listening or viewing on the go. Instructors can easily post and change content on their own without impacting the IT department.”
 Source: apple.com/education/products/ipod/itunes_u

But that is just Apple – you also have the support of podCALGARY. We are personally interested in working one on one with educators in our community to make podcasting possible. So drop us a note and let us know how we can help (EMAIL).

While this may sound cold they have made a major advancement in the realm of on demand content with the X-Box.  Console owners that have access to the X-Box live store will be able to download full length TV shows in HD as soon as the 22nd of November (06). (READ MORE)

This news isn’t revolutionary on it’s own but it does illustrate an important step toward on-demand content.  As producers it’s important for us to be mindful of how people may receive our content in the future.

I have started to do some research, but I realize that there are people out there with far better skills than I. Mark, from Electric Sky and the Canadian Podcast Buffet, and a number of other projects has started to look into it. the link to the socan document is here. (pdf)

I do not know the scope of this or how it will affect podcasters so I am not pushing any panic buttons here, but I do think that it is important to look into this and act when warrented.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Have you been thinking about joining the podcast revolution? As Doug's post stated earlier, Calgary is an "online" community, that means the 77% of Calgary's 1 million residents are your potential audience. Author, musician, or someone with something to say, record it and they will listen. Okay, not quite that simple, but it is easier than you think and Chinook Learning Services in Calgary has just made it even easier.

October 21 and November 04 2006 they will be offering "Podcasting Made Easy" A class designed to get you in to the "podosphere". It will focus on; planning your show, recording and editing, choosing a host for your files, building your feed and getting listed in a varity of directories. By the end of the 5 hour class you will be able to put together your own podcast and "feed" it to the world.

Now, if that was not enough, podCALGARY founding member, Daryl Cognito, is teaching the class. Daryl is the producer and host of The Poddog Show and Feed the Need, so you know you will not only learn, but also be entertained.

Okay, so the last part was a bit self serving, but I still think the class is worth checking out. If you have any questions, contact Chinook Learning Services, or hit my contact button in the side bar.

Chinook is also offering a class in blogging. I personally think that blogging and podcasting go hand in hand, so I think it is worth considering both of theses classes.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>I’ve stated that socially we may not all come to know Podcasting by its current definition but we will all feel its impact as a successful on demand content medium.  This medium has been served best (statistically) by Apple’s iTunes which is also the software component to the iPod portable media player.
I favor the accessibility of this medium since it puts broadcaster and independent producers on an even playing field leaving the audience to choose who they want their content from.  And now I expect this medium is about to have another growth spurt beginning in the fall and leading up to the holiday season when Microsoft launches there rival to the iPod – a personal playback device with WiFi features called Zune.
This loosely detailed product announcement came on July 21st – but I didn’t feel the world move.  Steve Jobs has already said that to stay current with iPod technology you need to buy one every year. Does that mean Apple can beat Microsoft?  No.  But more importantly, besides investors, who cares?

What’s fundamentally important is the flow and source of information.  If both of these devices continue to make it possible for an audience to subscribe to our content I’m all for them - especially if they can make it better.

While Apple and Microsoft are fighting for Wal-Mart shelf supremacy I hope that each of us will continue to grow and refine our independent productions that we can leverage the popularity of these doo-dads to share our messages with a growing audience.

A TV or radio with out a signal is just a box.  It what comes through them that makes them great.

<itunes:summary>At podCALGARY we are deeply passionate about Podcasting but our enthusiasm is often met with doubt and skepticism about the validity of this medium. I [Doug Nouwen] don’t personally think that the masses will come to know “Podcasting” as intimately as we have but I do believe it will greatly impact the way we all consume our media.

Podcasting is shifting the need for content to be available at a certain time to being available on demand. This goes against the norms of conventional broadcast and makes it possible for the audience to dictate exactly what they want and when.

Quality content will always find an audience and where it is produced regularly you can expect that audience to grow. That is why this web space was created – to introduce the community to relevant content and help bridge the gap between the audience and producer.

This online and on demand delivery medium also serves as a level playing field that can be employed by independent producers and conventional broadcasters. The end result is a far more diverse selection of content for the audience.

Many “nay-sayers” of this medium quickly dismiss its value saying, “it’s something for the kids and their iPods.” People with this opinion are missing a key ingredient of this medium – relevance. Without relevance this medium is with out value to an individual.

To those that are just discovering this medium or don’t believe it has value I encourage you to consult the Calgary Podcast Directory to learn what’s being produced in your community. Alternately there is a comprehensive directory of Podcasts produced nationally at: Canadapodcasts.ca. Or, visit a porthole like the Yahoo! Podcasting Directory and challenge its search field with criteria you care deeply about.

When you engage podcasting you will soon discover what we have come to know about this medium: we can schedule our own TV and radio stations with the programs we care most about and enjoy them when it’s most convenient for us. We are in control.
